The ISI Florence and Umbra Institute Studies in International Education

This journal has been created to facilitate the open exchange of ideas, research, experiences, and opinions on the subject of international education. BEYOND aims to update readers on the evolving needs/wants of students, assess the current issues affecting our programs, and anticipate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead of us. This journal recognizes that our learning is continuous.

The wide-ranging and fascinating topics are grouped in sections:

  • Academics: Teaching practice, research, and pedagogy.
  • Administrators: Delivering programs and services to students.
  • Alumni/Students: Testimonials from students past and present about the study abroad experience.
  • Resources: book reviews and other important information.

ISI Abroad is the independent organization behind two distinguished institutes of higher education in Italy: ISI Florence, founded in 2001, and ISI Perugia (The Umbra Institute), established in 1999. The organization also operates U.S. admissions offices in Florida, Virginia, and Massachusetts, ensuring close collaboration with partner institutions and students across the country.

Both Italian campuses are proud members of AACUPI (the American Association of College and University Programs in Italy) and hold Middle States accreditation through academic partnerships with Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island, and Arcadia University in Glenside, Pennsylvania. Through these affiliations, ISI Abroad partners with leading U.S. and international universities to create accessible, inclusive, and academically enriching study abroad opportunities that prioritize both safety and student growth.

In 2004, ISI Abroad founded the ISI Consortium for State Universities in collaboration with the University of Connecticut and Pennsylvania State University. Today, the Consortium includes eight member state universities working together to expand and strengthen their shared mission—offering innovative and meaningful global education experiences for students, faculty, and staff alike.
